Are You Too Proud Of Your School?

This evening I was hanging out with Maxene Magalona and her mom Pia Magalona at a Coffee Bean. Pia was telling a story about how much she enjoyed the Katy Perry concert and she brought up a funny incident where Katy went to the crowd right before she was going to sing "Hot and Cold" and got some (gay?) dude to go up on stage with her as she was going to do the typical dance-flirt-with-audience-member act that's pretty popular with the crowd. So she gets this dude and she asks him the very simple and universally understood question:
Katy: "Where are you from?"
Likely gay dude: "Ateneo."
Katy: "Ateneo in the house!"
Ateneo. What an idiot. I want to punch this guy in the throat. Not that I have anything against Ateneo, in fact, I wish I went to Ateneo for college, but what a dumbass--his answer to the simplest question was a very conyo-esque, Ateneo? The moment I heard the story, I thought that this would be a great topic for my next blog entry. What fuels a moron of this caliber to interpret a question (albeit) as broad and general as that and make it mean, "What high-end school are you from?".
So what do you guys think? Have students from these high-end schools become too proud of them? I enjoy the sense of school pride as I'm a huge sports fan and big believer in higher education. (If you listen to my radio show, you are likely aware that I believe the road to success consists of two parts: 1) an absolute dedication to your education [meaning no social life, no girlfriend, no barkada while in school] and 2) kiss as much ass as you can on your way to the top). But it is rather frustrating that at times, school pride has gotten to a level where we place a narcissistic "THE" in front of our school name--as you may have heard students reference their school as "THE Ateneo" or "THE U.P." It makes my blood boil when I hear it structured this way and now if we have come to a point where the answer to "Where are you from" is your school, I'd like to wish again that an asteroid come hit our planet so society can start all over.
Here is the video of said idiot, unfortunately, the (correctly used) "Ateneo" part was omitted.

and he's wearing his sweater around his waist. Sheeeesh. Is he for real?
I'm pretty guilty of doing this, but not in public. For example last week, I went drinking with friends of friends. I'm from DLSU, and my high school friends are from mostly Ateneo and UST. So when the group we met up with asked where I was from, my inital answer was DLSU. Maybe because we were mostly students? And prior to going to the place, I was told they were also Ateneans.
It was quite ignorant for the kid to have answered in such a way, but I guess through the excitement of going on stage, and most likely being with his friends at the concert, PLUS all the cameras, the initial way to answer was Ateneo. Then again, if he had said Montalban, Katy Perry would be like "Say what?"
you have a point mo.. i'm from ateneo but i don't tolerate that type of people.. where are you from, the answer is ATENEO...connect please...wtf...
Agree ^ :)
stupid gay! kainggit he kissed katy. HAHAH!
and this lucky bastard gets to kiss katy...
kudos for bringing this up!
i say it's one of the unwritten rules of "boasting". even in our workplace, there are bunch of people from the same so-called high end school who repeatedly talk and talk about their school EVERYDAY. ugh! they think they got this "pasoshal" effect when in fact in the eyes of other people, they look just so STUPID!
It only proves that not all Atenean are Smart..
^ You mean, Ateneans?;-)
'Hit the nail on the head on this one, Mo. I think that La Sallians and Ateneans are the biggest culprits regarding this syndrome. It's such an ego-trip for them. I went to 1 of those schools and after graduating over 10 yrs ago, I thought that "privileged feeling" will subside and we'll all somehow be equals outside the walls of our respective universities... Sadly that feeling that your better than everyone else doesn't end there.
Sayang. This same feeling hinders everyone from reaching out and helping each other on a daily basis. Sure we'll bond as a nation after a super typhoon but it's the day to day life that counts the most.
What's totally iritating is the fact that people think that once they are in a certain school with such credibility they think that it defines their personality and intellectual status. Like who knows the bastard could be from a famous school with the worst course or the worst the school has to offer. To just simply cut the chase when ask where you from it is always safe to answer "from here" :) to avoid controversies, possible boo's! or worst be the show stealer by being the Ice Breaker
What a dumbass, this only proves that not all students coming from that side of Quezon City is smarter than the rest. I think its considerably understandable if you were in a college inuman hangou/ watching a game. But are u kinding? It's Katy Perry, i don't think that was appropriate. Seriously, its either the guy is boasting he's from Ateneo or he's just dumbass. And I agree with the whole "The". What's wrong with saying you studied in UP or Ateneo or Lasalle? I think if Atenistas are saying that they are really good with their english, they should probably know that the word "THE" isn't really appropriate.
St Paul College of Bocaue, Mo!
I totally agree
schools shmools..
he'll probably end up with a dead-end job anyway.
I have dealt with my share of konyos back in college, and today, most of them have little to show for.
Whatever. I find it so funny when people are always complaining about Ateneans, Lasallians, etc, being mayabang and know-it-alls. It's also funny how people call us "Pasosyal" when in fact, who else is there to call "Sosyal"?
Sige, tawagin nating sosyal ang mga workers and laborers. Sige nga? Kaya nga the term is sosyal diba? For a reason.
If you went to THAT highschool, are you absolutely sure you wouldn't be proud to be from there? If you had amazing experiences there, sige, hindi niyo paguusapan years after? Sometimes you can't judge people just by a simple answer they give at a concert. And more than that, you shouldn't judge the whole of Ateneo to be that way. Or any other exclusive school.
"But it is rather frustrating that at times, school pride has gotten to a level where we place a narcissistic "THE" in front of our school name--as you may have heard students reference their school as "THE Ateneo" or "THE U.P.""
I've never understood why an ungodly number of Ateneans say "The Ateneo." Duh. 17 years of schooling and a year of teaching there, and not once did I ever call it "The Ateneo." Sablay talaga pakinggan.
Pero yung "The U.P.," bago yan, wala pa akong naririnig na taga-UP na nagsabi niyan. =)
@Crys♥:
<sarcasm>
people call you sosyal? wow.
</sarcasm>
and about 'exclusive' schools, its sad that we deem schools 'exclusive' by the amount of money that needs to be spent to get in the said schools and not by the amount of intellects that actually goes in the school.
i mean., the Nobel Peace Prize, that's exclusive.
Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with his answer.
OA ka lang mo. haha
To be honest, if I were still in college, I would've done the same thing...it's not really about being too proud of which school I go to. I think it's only because whenever I hear this question, what pops in my mind is the other person is asking which school I go to. So the automatic answer would be the name of my school, not exactly where I live. Silly, I know, but I guess back then I didn't think it would be of anyone's interest to want to find out if I'm from QC or Antipolo or anywhere else. :P
